I DON'T need it 😀 😀 Seriously, I don't need it. By the looks.of it it will have best clocking chillers. I think I will wait few days for overclocking reviews to give me an idea either settle with 12 core chip or go all out with that stupid 16core thingy.

What I meant to say (and Google autocomplete ruined it for me) is, looks like it will have best clocking chiplets 🙂 it seems they did design it for high clocks as well, so it's realistic to expect couple more much better steppings in near future

Currently, I am running the 2700X and the 16 threads chew through most tasks insanely fast. I do game on the rig but the primary use is media encoding and transcoding. Given that the 2700X runs at 75% avg CPU usage while transcoding a 4K videos to .x265, it would be interesting to see what the 3950X does performing the same task. If there is more than a 50% decrease in time to run then it would be worth it for me to upgrade to the 3950X as the time savings would pay for the CPU in less than 1 month.

I will be waiting for reviews before making this purchase. I am not really using the 2700x that I have now to its full potential. A 12 core would suit me fine, but I am not happy about getting cut down rejected cores. The 12 core parts are obviously 2 X 8 with cores disabled. I really would like the 16 core, but not at the expense of a lot of frequency.

It might be the case that 16 cores are getting best clocking/behaving chips. I'm torn as well between waiting for September or jumping into 12 core boat

Absolutely terrific efficiency from the 7nm process alongside the Zen2 arch. 16C/32T for 105W TDP is a scientific wonder imho. And it shows that AMD chose to set the default settings of the CPU to be safe in allowing any B350/B450/X370/X470/X570 motherboard to work with it without any problem. For anyone having better quality in motherboard cooling, RAM speed and cooling capacity it is sure that the XFR will do great things allowing it to approach 5GHz without manual oc.

For my use of PC though, that CPU is over the top and I would prefer a 6/8 core that could clock high. And for this case, AMD has done pretty well also with their 3600(X) and 3700X, without any big jumps in pricing.

This is the latest technology but it is fun to also consider how it will look as used hardware in years to come. The AM4 motherboard will have advanced as far as it will go, and the last, best CPU for that socket will be this one. If you are buying second hand in a few years, this will be a great piece of kit, I think.  If you are buying for Christmas, also a great bit of kit. You ought to be able to leapfrog several generations of CPU sitting on this! It will take a long time for games to make use of all the cores and threads. Also, it is optimized for liquid cooling, all in one units are recommended. Well done AMD for this one!

Does it have non-Free micro-code and require non-Free firmware, though? What a shame...

Woohoo, enjoy 🙂 you gonna like it. My 3900x is a complete and utter beast, I can only imagine what extra binning and few extra threads can do 🙂

The build has been completed, the raw CPU performance is amazing (I'm upgrading from a 4770k).

3950X
Aorus X570 Master
G.Skill Trident Neo 32GB (2x16) 3600 CL16-19-19-39
Samsung M.2 970 Evo Plus 1TB
Intel M.2 660p 2TB
1000W Seasonic Prime Ultra 80+ Titanium
Noctua NH-D15 SE AM4
8 Noctua NF-A14 PWM 140mm Cromax Black
BeQuiet! Dark Base Pro 900 Rev.2

I've opted to install my "old" 980ti, the 2080ti is way overpriced and I want to see what AMD introduces during CES in January.
Upgrade imminent.

Made a video of the build, Timelapsed it.
Other more Adobe Premiere Pro savvy people could probably do a better job, but is is what it is:
